Greetings from the submitting-to-film-festival-front.
In regard to the documentary we just finished (explained here), I wish I could say the expensive part is over. Well, I suppose the really expensive part is over, in a manner of speaking, but pimping a film, especially a low budget thing like this, to the point where people see it other than like my mom and the Nella (actually my mom hasn’t even seen it yet), well here’s how that works.
There ain’t much money in documentary; that we know. Very, very rarely do people turn a profit on these things, especially with short docs. But you can build a career for yourself, and you can also draw attention to the subject you’re making the thing about. Hell, look at how “going green” exploded after An Inconvenient Truth came out. Granted that was a feature. Starring Al Gore. Anyway!
Conventional wisdom says that pretty much any independent film needs to go through festivals. This is the first film I’ve made that has a shot at getting into big name festivals and actually being seen by people (ya know, besides the Internet), but not knowing where we’ll premiere or where we’ll be accepted, basically the plan now is to submit to as many festivals as we can.
Each festival has different submission prices, ranging from around thirty bucks to a hundred, depending on the festival and how late you’re submitting it. Seattle cleaned me out at about $80. LAFF and Edinburgh FF came out to another $100, which was donated by Ritvik. I want to submit to two more before this round is over at the end of the month, but I am clean wiped out, as this is turning into a rather expensive ordeal as I have another twenty or so in the pipe. I thought I could do another push to the Internet for fundraising, but realized I don’t have anything of value left to sell! (Hell most of what I hocked last time was nonsense). Nothing, save perhaps the movie.
We finally have a copy of it to make screeners for festivals, although we are NOT allowed to put the thing online yet. If I ever do, it’ll be after next year’s Oscar season. But I know a lot of people have contacted me out of interest of seeing it, so assuming there is interest out there, I think I have a way to fundraise a bit more and still stay at least in a legal grey area.
For anyone out there willing to donate $15 or more to my paypal link here, I will mail you a screener. In the donation note, include your name and address. It won’t be fancy; just something I burned off my Macbook, but it will be a screener you can show to friends, family and colleagues but NOT put up on the Internet. Again, this isn’t my bidding, I do NOT own the copyright to this film. If you put any of it online, you will get the hammer of the University of Southern California’s wrath. But everyone I’ve talked to about this film from the Internets, including some people who ended up IN the film, have been really super cool, so hopefully we won’t run into any problems here. To make this clear, if it goes up online, I won’t get in trouble. You will. I’m not losing anything if it does go up online, and believe me, it’s not my rule.
I can’t thank you guys enough for all your help and support in making this thing; no way I could have done it without you. Y’all are the bomb diggity.a
And as for us getting our asses to the festivals if we were to get accepted into a competition, well, we’ll cross that bridge when we get there.
Disabling the link for now- sorry!
EDIT: International people, I can ship to you through media mail! Just throw in an extra few bucks to get through the customs and whatnot.
Hi Lindsay,
I’m interested in seeing it, but live in The Netherlands.
Do you also ship to my little country? And if so what would it cost?
regards,
Richard
I’d be shipping media mail; I know it’s not much, even internationally. Just kick in an extra couple bucks for international costs?
K thanks
I just sent you a donation with a little extra.
Looking forward to it.
Have a good weekend!
Saw a link to this from Jezebel. I’m broke as a joke that’s not even funny, but have you considered Kickstarter? Put a list together of the festivals you want to submit the film to, the costs, and let the internet help you!
I keep considering kickstarter and backing away, even though I know it’s a good idea. My mantra has been more in the vein of “As much money as I have? THAT’S HOW MANY FESTIVALS I WILL ENTER!” Hardly how it works in the real world, I know, but it may come to that in order to get us to these places. I suppose I’m not positive we’ll even get into some of them because of the nature of the material, although my professor (who has won three Oscars for doc) seems to think we have a good shot at the big boys. So we shall see! Thanks for stopping by!
is a screener a copy of the film?
Yes, it’s a preview “screening.” This isn’t necessarily what the final piece would be like. It’s probably the version sent to the film festivals. If my parlance is still correct, anyway. I had one course relevant to film making, and it was for script writing.
Yes, it’s the finished film, the very same I’m sending to festivals. It has a really ghetto DVD menu I made in DVD studio pro and everything!
yay! thanks!
I has bought me a copy!
Wow, “interactive menus”? A screening copy with extras!
Love ghetto menus. Gots me a copy now as well!
I donated. Glad to help and I can’t wait to watch the film. I love your feminist commentary as the Nostalgia Chick. Good luck Lindsay!
Despite USC ‘owning’ copyright to your film, you have managed to devise an ingenious plan to distribute your film and in the process raise money to help submit it to as many film festivals as possible! Brilliant thinking – the school likely won’t bother with legality issues of this as you are using the raised funds to promote ‘their’ film. Quick question – will USC ‘own’ copyright to your film forever or is it for a limited period of time, after which you can get back what was rightfully yours in the first place? I am sure you will have a lot of interest in your documentary and raise enough to hit up the festival scene! Definitely submit to the Toronto Film Festival if you can! Best of luck Lindsay!
Donated. After you get rich and famous I will sell my copy on Ebay for millions! MWHAHAHA!!!
No, seriously I’m just interested to see how you do on a “slightly” more serious note than nostalgic movies.
Good luck!
I’ve been dying to watch this. I almost brought myself to participate and then I chickened out. Maybe I’ll get some more guts from watching the people who had it in them to talk about it.
I’ve just made a donation and I cannot wait to navigate your ghetto DVD menu. I also hope you get enough donations to enter into every festival your heart desires. This film and you and your team deserve it.
Ok, so I have a way to test my brand new credit card, once it arrives. Guess I’ll send you $20 a second time.
Well, considering I donated to help get this project off the ground, I might as well keep it in the air. Lindsay, you got my vote again. And sorry that you won’t be able to properly taste for a while from all that licking.
BTW, you may not think that you’re a hero. Just the fact that you were willing to tell your story when others are afraid to, like that recent 16 & Pregnant episode “No Easy Decision” (which they’ve only shown once, I think – but that’s for another rant), shows that you are to some people. You just keep staying true to yourself – even though if there were no Kirk, there would be no Picard. (blows raspberry)
Hey Lindsay, big fan of yours from That Guy With the Glasses, and just excited about your new documentary.
I write for a film website, The Criterion Cast, and we tend to cover big and small, as long as it’s out there we’re interested. Especially when it comes to documentaries. I was going to donate, but wanted to ask if it was okay to review it for my site. The word might spread a bit (in a good way, of course) and maybe if you wanted, an interview perhaps?
Either way, a donation will be forthcoming. I just wanted to shoot the question first.
Yes, definitely! We want word to spread, be reviewed like a real movie and stuff! And sure, I’d be happy to do an interview.
haha of course. I just donated. I said the hell with lunch for the next few days, need to support film! If you want, check out the site and we have a podcast too, where we geek out about movies and the like.
Can’t wait to check it out and get the word to spread. Awesome! And your film is a real movie, so I will definitely treat it like that.
As a burgeoning (aka wannabe) film critic, I’ve spent several years dying for a screener. This is the closest I’ll ever come to having one, I’m sure, so I was happy to thrown in $20. Out of curiosity, am I allowed to discuss it at all online? And would I be able to reproduce the poster you made (if I can track it down again)?
Yes, please do! The more the better!
As for the poster, you can post it, I’m not crazy about it (I had nothing to do with making it- the producers did) but it’s what we have for the moment. It’s on the facebook page – http://www.facebook.com/theaword here.
Iffff you want I dabble in graphic design and could maybe make you something better?
Dabble.. isn’t really the right word. Working towards starting a small business in graphics (geeky girl graphics, coming to a computer near you!)/enjoy creating movie posters is.. a better description.
I would love to support your Movie! How much to ship to Germany?
I just sent you some moneys! I really hope that you can get into the festivals you want to!
I don’t have much of a following (like, six people, all of whom are awesome), but I do plan on reviewing your movie for my little website as soon as I can.
I’m really looking forward to watching this.
I’m interested in seeing it, but not too interested in having a dvd. Would there be a way to donate and then have a digital copy or not? If not I’m might just get the dvd.
Lindsay, you may not consider yourself a hero; but you are to some people. This just confirms it. Go get ‘em.
My review of “The A Word” can be found here: http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/blogs/latest/entry/my-review-of-qthe-a-wordq
Your documentary was incredible. It made me cry more than once. My best friend since elementary school just had an abortion less than a month ago, and the emotional confusion she is going through closely matches yours. I’m going to try to get you another donation because I want to give her a copy. She needs to know that she’s not alone.
I am ‘a sad’ as the kids say. I just got the DVD screener in the mail and it doesn’t have any file on it at all. I tried it on a few players (even at two friend’s houses) and my computer, and nada. Very very sad now because I wanted to watch it tonight. Should I send back the copy you sent? I loved the personalized note on the disc too.
Hello! Got your screener in the post today, watched it, broke down, recovered, and am jotting down notes for the review as we speak. I have a relatively small reader base but hopefully will pass it on to many of them in the process of spreading the word.
My little review:
I got it last week but I figured I let it sink in before making a comment.
Firstly, your handwriting is oddly similar to mine lol
As for your movie. I found it moving and it was good to see how vulnerable you made yourself in it. As someone who is terrified of opening up in public I found that very brave!
I do have some minor criticisms on the technical aspects. And I mean this as constructive criticism. Some of the interviews, well meant as they were felt a little staged. Also the timelapse transition bits. They worked but, they have been done many times before. Which is why they didn’t have the impact they should have had.
Again I’m not bashing your movie and it really made an impression on me (heck I got into an argument with a friend of mine about Abortion over your movie) but just giving you a few pointers.
You’ve got talent and I’m curious what you’ll do in the future
I got it a few days ago but just got around to watching it. Watched it several times in quick succession. Reviewed it (for lack of a better word) here: http://martianbethany.spectralreality.net/2011/02/the-a-word/
Kinda wanted to give you a hug and a cookie at times.
I have somewhere in the range of 40 bucks on an amazon gift card. If I send you 15 dollars worth of the stuff of your choosing, can I get a copy of the screener?
I’m not joking.
I’m broke as fuck.
Sure! i’ve been using the hell out of Amazon to buy supplies i.e. envelopes, labels, DVDs, etc. Bring on the gift cards!
Also broke as fuck,
L
[...] .mp3s, and novels will be written by machines in newspeak. So when she blogged about needing donations, I thought why the hell not. I donated $15 and only then saw the part where international [...]
Hi Lindsay,
I dropped a few bucks in the kitty for ya. I look forward to seeing your doc. I have really enjoyed your vids on TGWTG and just found out about this more serious work today.
I honestly believe that you have the potential to influence the media for the better. Keep up the great work and I will keep enjoying it!
Sincerely,
Kieran Maguire
Lindsay,
Wow, that’s all I can say. I found out about the movie because I just added your facebook page to mine. I watched the pitch video (if that’s what it was called) and I have to see this movie. I love how you combine the humor of the Nostalgia Chick with the seriousness of the subject. I’ve donated my 15 dollars so hopefully I’ll get to see it soon.
On a side note, the Paducah Film Society in my area puts on a film festival every year. This is the website:
http://www.riversedgefilmfestival.com/
I am not affiliated with this festival but I think your movie would be perfect for it. If you’re interested in submitting let me know and I will personally cover the submission fee. If it gets accepted, I’ll try to get some people together to help do advertising for it during the festival.
Sincerely,
Damon Brazzell
E-Mail me links to amazon pages for stuff that adds up to 15-20 bucks with an address that I can send it all to.
When you get everything safe and sound, you can e-mail me the screener.
Does that work?
Hey Lindsay, just sent off a donation because I would like to support you and see your film. I added a note that I’d like to have a picture of the hammer of Thor with the USC logo on it.
Done, and done!
Lindsay, thank you for the great drawing (“Shit!”) of the hammer of Thor on the DVD screener. I think your film is wonderful and from your heart, and what makes it really meaningful is having followed your thoughts on far less meaningful material for the last couple of years–I understand exactly what your mom meant when she said that she felt it was too soon and that you would be used, but I think the fact that you didn’t cop out and try to force some definitive resolution is what makes your film actually have a real impact beyond simply being a tool for someone else. You have a voice, and you used it, and that makes you much braver than many other filmmakers–I hope it will inspire other women who have gone through a similar journey as you to know they are not alone and that what they have to say is vital to hear.
When you are ready to submit to film festivals, give our festival a look. We are in Glen Rose, Texas, home to the Neo-Relix film festival, Paluxysaures Jonesi and the last Nuclear Plant built in the United States, Comanche Peak.
Hey, I’m submitting now! I’ll definitely look into this one- I think my other short film (It’s called “Catholic Robot”- it’s about, well…) might be more in tune with the audience for this one, but I’ll be sure to give it a shot!
I live in Saudi Arabia.
Will you be able to send me a copy of the DVD?
I will take care of the costs of course.
Hey Lindsay,
Didn’t get my copy yet, and while I am international, Toronto isn’t too far.
I was the god_loves_sketch (long story) paypal and Wellesley st one if that helps. Maybe it was a missing apt #?
I just got my copy of the A-Word and I have to say that this topic was particularly interesting to me. I attended Catholic Schools all of my life and, though I was never Catholic, I was always bombarded with the rhetoric from the conservative side advocating against abortion. Eventually I became so fed up with the topic and fighting to hear from the other side that I became callous to the idea and have given it little though since graduating from high school years ago. However, when I came across your entry about the documentary you were doing I was genuinely intrigued to see a point-of-view free from the bias I had been so exposed to. A perspective which focused not simply on the child but on the outcome for the woman going through this ordeal. I just finished watching the A-Word and I am glad to see that the issue of abortion is addressed not from one side or the other but from a point of experience from a person reaching out to world to make sense of her ordeal. The documentary was poignant but showed the reality of what abortion is from your eyes not from those who have never experienced this loss before and who can only reference researched material. This is something I will not soon forget and I hope that many more will be exposed to this documentary and will take pause to consider the issue as I do now.
I should mention. After reading what I just read, you seem to be an fantastic author! Really, you use proper grammar, proper use of pronunciations, proper everything! I might also like to add and say that I believe you pin pointed my style of writing as well which I adore! What I also like about your blog is that you give an opportunity for a larger variety of an audience to unravel the immense storyline of your writings. And with that, I believe you will definitely continue succeeding in flourishing an exceptionally well written piece
Now that Oscars are over and done with, I finally got around to reviewing a documentary from one Miss Ellis. Hope it’s up to snuff, despite the brevity.
http://auteursandovations.blogspot.com/2011/02/a-word-2010.html
[...] It is actively painful at time to watch. I was moved to tears more than once. I knew Ellis was good–I’ve been a fan of hers for over a year. But I had no idea that her potential was this great. This is a movie that deserves, NEEDS to be seen…and if you’d like to see it to, read about how you can obtain a screening copy and help fund submitting the movie to various film festivals here. [...]
Hi Lindsay,
Got home from work today to find my DVD in the mailbox. Thanks for sending it. It will have a special place in my collection. I just finished watching it and I must say that you are very brave to make a film like this. It sheds some light on a subject that many people consider to be “cut-and-dry.” It just reminds us that there are no absolutes in such a complex world.
Keep up the good work,
Kieran
Hi there!
I’m aware that this is kind of an old thread but I wanted to give you my opinion of the movie, because what is the internet for than to give people your unasked for opinion?
First of all, I very much enjoyed it. Most of the problems I had with it were purely technical and very fixable. I appreciate that you kept such a sensitive topic in the grey area and didn’t try to offer one opinion as better than anothers. This probably was because it was such a personal topic for you and I think that more sensitive subjects like these should be tackled as personally as yours was, as it gives viewers the chance to explore their own feelings on the idea as opposed to being told what to think.
I actually wished that it was longer. I was wondering if in a few years when you had more money and were emotionally prepared if you had thought of perhaps expanding on the topic?
The most interesting part for me was when you talked about the complete lack of counselling available for women who make this huge decision in their lives. Their are support groups available for nearly any other possibly traumatic experience someone could experience and yet there is hardly anything available for something as monumental as abortion. I had this discussion with a friend of mine recently who pointed out that the government couldn’t really give out funding because it would like it was coming across as pro-choice, and that there have been support groups started in the past but that nearly all of them at some point begin to recieve funding from churches, at the sacrifice of pushing the churches message.
Anyways… tl:dr, basically I thought it was great and I look forward to seeing other projects of yours
Is there a deadline to get the screener?
Just donated 15 bucks, sorry it couldnt be more but I’m quite poor, keep up the fantastic work!
Hey Stuart, you might have been in the group I sent out after I got back from Chicago since it looks like you donated around when we started filming. Please tell me if you don’t get it in another week or two, I’ll assume it got devoured by someone’s mail system. I’ll send you another copy, no worries.
Damm, I didnt read the part about internationally shipping, will be going back to donate a couple of bucks now. *ashamed*
I just donated 20 dollars, it’s all I could really give, but this is an important story that must be told and I’m eager to see. I hope you are able to get the word out more.
I donated about a month ago now, I don’t want to seem impatient and I know your probably very busy but I was just wondering what the usual time frame may be for recieving the dvd? ( I live in the uk). Cheers.
I donated the 15 bucks and a few more for delivery as requested for getting a copy of the documentary. I’m really wondering whats going on, has the offer expired?
OMG I feel so bad now as my message was a quite short with you, (I shall go and flog my self 50 times as penance) Thanks very much, and I look forward to seeing you in the third year anniversary.
It arrived!!! yayyyyyyyy, watched it and thought it was excellent, very moving and certainly makes you ask questions. Thanks again for the opportunity to see it
hey lindsay,
just wondering if you can give a status update for people who donated and still haven’t received their DVDs yet?
Hey Lindsay! I donated back in January and the DVD hasn’t come through. I’m dying to see it!
I donated the $15 on May 23, but I totally forgot to put my address. What can I do to still get the dvd? My mailing address was connected to my paypal account, but not in the note like you instructed. You can see my name on this post, if it will help you locate which donation is mine. Maybe I’m checking for nothing, but I wanted to make sure I did my part to be responsible.
I’m still waiting for confirmation on my donation, as well. I really want to see this thing.
Did any of you receive a copy yet? I still haven’t and the wonder that is PayPal has denied me the right to take action since it has been more than 45 days.
I just found started reading your blog today, since I’m almost done with my Masters program, and I hope it’s not too late to donate and help you out. Even if it is, you’re a great cause to donate to, and I understand being broke, now that I’m almost done with my Masters and am $30,000 more in debt than when I started, and facing a very depressing job market for educators.
I’d love to see your film, if you’re still sending it out, and I think you’re extremely brave to broach such a controversial and personal subject. Thank you for sharing your story, and opening up discourse. This is what I love about documentaries, that they start discussions.
If you’re still sending it out, please let me know because I’ll gladly kick in the $15 donation. By the way, I wrote an essay about how abortion is treated as a non-option in the media and how those who have it are dismissed as “bad girls.” I sent it to Elisa, did you receive it yet? Please let me know. Thank you.
I would love to have a copy of this doc, are you still accepting donations for it?
I asked on your fb page as well, but is this offer still valid? I would have no problem paying 20 Dollar for it and I understand it may take a while till you have time to send it, but I would love to see that movie, I was really moved by the Trailer and think you are an extremely talented filmmaker. I hope this movie continues to meet with success
Howdy doody,
I love your work and really want to see this. Are you still sending out copies?
-Angela
Only seeing your reply reminded me, I still haven’t received my copy…from…around July, I think.
I’m not sure if the offer still stands for the documentary DVD, but I still sent in a donation. I hope your film goes far, Lindsey. You’re extremely brave to make a film like this.
